Coach Weekly QnA: long run the week before full marathon; running attire when raining

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Yogesh asks: “I am running a full marathon next Sunday. Is it OK to do a 30K run at my target pace this Sunday?”

A. If you are targeting the full marathon as a race, then you should be well into your taper by now. Doing a 30K run the earlier Sunday is not advisable as it will not give you enough time for rest and recovery. No amount of training you do so close to the event is going to help in the event.

Do a max 15-20K run and focus on rest and recovery in race week instead.

Q. Girish asks “What should I wear when I am running in the rain?”

A.  For light rain, I find it best to just wear a cap to prevent the rain from hitting the face. If its raining heavily, you may use a light ventilated jacket. A rain jacket seems nice to wear when raining but you will find that the heat you generate while running gets trapped and you will start to feel uncomfortable and it will affect your workout.

If the ventilated jacket starts to get uncomfortable because of the heat, just take it off and tie it around the waist.
