Ask The Coach Weekly QnA: walk break between warmup and main session; ST before or after workout

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Poonam asks: “I do a 5 minute walk between the warmup and the tempo run. Is that OK?”

A. Yes,a short break between the warmup and the main session/set is fine. Many athletes take this break to to focus mentally and prepare for the main session/set.

Though you may want to reduce the duration to something like 2 minutes. Make sure that you are walking around during that period though. Else your body will “start the cool down” and get stiff.

Q. Tejas asks “Should I do strength training before or after a workout?”

A.  Do the strength training routine after the workout. This prevents the fatigue from the strength training from affecting your workout which is especially important if its a hard workout.

You do not have to do the strength training immediately after, you cna do it a few hours later, in the evening, or whatever time is convinient for you really.
