Ask The Coach Weekly QnA: varying workout routes; sleepiness after workouts

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Vandana asks: “Is it desirable to keep changing your workout routes?”

A. While its not absolutely necessary as such, a change of route and scenery is good to keep your workouts from getting boring and monotonous.

A change of routes is also useful so that your body does not get used to a particular profile or type of route. For example, if you always run on flat routes, then a race with a rolling route with climbs will give you great difficulty. Similarly, if you always run on trails, you will not get the same bounce and response from your feet and legs when participating in a road race. So, the conditions of your target race are also something to consider when making a choice of training routes.

Q. Charu asks “After a hard workout, I often feel very sleepy. Is this normal”

A. Yes, I would say this is somewhat normal after some hard workouts. The best way to get rid of it is to give the body what it needs as quickly as possibly. Even a short 20 minute nap works wonders and you will wake up feeling refreshing and ready to tackle the rest of the day.

Also make sure you eat and drink enough post a hard workout so that your body can recover its lost energy and also start the recover/muscle-rebuilding process.
