Ask The Coach Weekly QnA: commuting to office on bike; time target for first full

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Ashutosh asks “Is it advisable to commute to/from the office on the bike while training for a full marathon?”

A. As long as the commute time is less than 30 minutes (so maximum 1 hour to/from combined) and you keep the effort easy, there should not be an issue. In fact, it may even help you as it will enable you to get in some some aerobic exercise without the wear and tear associated with running. Just make sure to keep the effort level easy.

Q. Rupa asks “I am afraid if I do not complete my first full marathon within my target time, I will completely loose motivation and confidence in myself. What should I do”

A. A full marathon is hard. A first full marathon is harder still. Dont make it even more hard on yourself by imposing a time target on yourself. The main goal of your first full marathon should be to finish. If you are able to remain strong and get within striking distance of your target time that’s the icing on the cake.

You should train well, and close to your race, arrive at a reasonable and realistic time target based on how your training has been. Then use that time target as a guideline for how to pace on your race day. But remember its just a guideline – you can expect to lose (or gain!, you never know how race day goes) a few minutes, especially given that its your first full.

Enjoy your training and give your best on race day. Don’t get wound up about a specific outcome or time target.
