Ask The Coach QnA: warmup length; break between warmup and workout

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Aditya asks “How long should a warmup be?”

A. In general, the harder/faster the workout, the longer the warmup. I would advise at least a 2K warmup before an interval/tempo workout. More if your body needs it, especially in cold conditions.

Typically, easy runs do not need any warmup, instead you can just start them off on the slower side.

Q. Raviraj asks “Is it OK to take a break between the warmup and the workout”

A. Yes, that’s fine. You can take a few seconds or minutes of break after your warmup and before your main session. You can use this break to drink some water, set your GPS watch, and gather yourself physically and mentally for the main session.

Don’t take too long a break however else your body may cool down and get stiff.
