Ask The Coach Weekly QnA: sleeveless wetsuits; running on treadmills

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Anuj asks: “Can I use a sleeveless wetsuit for wetsuit mandatory swims? What are the pros and cons of a sleeveless wetsuit?”

A. Yes, a sleeveless wetsuit can be used for wetsuit mandatory swims in a triathlon. The pros of a sleeveless wetsuit is that you get slightly more freedom in shoulder movement, and some athletes find the sleeveless one less claustrophobic. The con is that if you do not wear it right or if its too loose a fitting for you, then excess water can enter the wetsuit and cause you to sink a bit and increase drag.

Buoyancy-wise, there is not much practical difference between a full wetsuit and a sleeveless one.

Q. Amit asks: “Is it OK to run on the treadmill when training for half or full marathon?”

A. Sure, treadmills are perfectly fine. There major advantage is their convenience – you can train at any time of the day and even in inclement weather. If you have never run on the treadmill before, start with short and easy runs only.
