Ask The Coach Weekly QnA: doing injury rehab exercises; running as a substitute for gym workout

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Priya asks: “Do I need to do rehab exercises for a specific niggle/injury only when it bothers me?

A. Even if the injury or niggle is gone, it is advisable to continue doing the exercises for upto 2 weeks to make sure that the injury/niggle does not crop up again. After that you can reduce the frequency but if it pops up its ugly head again, be sure to nip it in the bid and start the exercises right away.

Q. Sid asks “I was supposed to do a gym workout today but the gym was closed, so I did a 10K run instead. Is that OK?”

A. If this was a run not in the plan then that was not advisable. Running is a totally different activity than a gym workout and is not a substitute, especially when you are already running so much on your running days.

There are lots of gym-like workouts you can do at home even if the gym is closed. Opt for body weight workouts, kettlebell workouts, or maybe do a core routine.
