Ask The Coach Weekly QnA: fixing flats; super-long runs

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Anil asks: “How should I fix flats? Should I repair the puncture or change the tube”

A. Change now, repair at leisure! During training rides and races, you should simply change the tube so that minimal time is wasted. You can repair the puncture later at your leisure. This implies that you must carry spare tubes and basic equipment like pliers and hand pump during your rides and races.

Q. Hrushikesh asks: “Is it advisable to do super long runs (35K-40K-45K) during training”

A. Not for amateurs, no. Firstly, these runs take a lot of time to recover from, and they also expose you to injury. The risk-reward ratio is not favorable. If you get so hammered or injured from a weekend super-long run that you are not able to continue training come the next workout in the plan, then that super-long run is of no use. As a famous coach once said: “You should do the training, so that you can do the training”. In other words, your training should not cause you to get sidelined.
