Ask The Coach Weekly QnA: device to measure swim cadence; drinking frequency during workouts

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Pushkar asks “Is there any device which measures your swim cadence?”

A. Yes, there are a few metronomes available specifically designed for swimming. One such is the FINIS Tempo Trainer Pro. You wear it under your swim cap and it emits an audible beep at your set cadence. Your job is to try to match your strokes to that cadence.  Its pretty illuminating how lazy your stroke can get after some time if there is no cadence to guide you.

Q. Neha asks “Should I drink during workouts and if so how often?”

A. Yes, especially in hot weather! In general, you should drink for any workouts lasting longer than 45-60 minutes. Reduce this guideline for hot and humid conditions.

As for how frequently, take a few sips every 10-15 minutes. Do not drink too much at once.
