Ask The Coach Weekly QnA: comrades training; working out after late night

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Vijay asks: “My circumstances only allow me to train on Sundays. I am training for Comrades 2018. Can I run 60-65K every Sunday till Comrades. I trained for SCMM the same way and did 3:24”

A. To be honest, given the limited days available for training, you should not be doing Comrades. Do it when your schedule opens up so that you can train properly and more importantly, more safely and in a healthy manner. In your circumstances, there is no leeway to adjust or modify training at all. Given your statement about SCMM, you seem like an exception, so sure, you may be able to train the way you are suggesting and even complete, but thats not an optimal, safe or healthy way to train. I will be using your case as an example, of how not to train!

Q. Pooja asks: “I had a late night, is it still OK to train the next morning?”

A. A late night is a very poor excuse not to train the next morning. While doing a workout after an insufficient sleep is not the ideal scenario, its better than not doing anything at all. You may not be able to do the workout well, but again that’s better than not doing it at all.

Its important to mention that what’s important is the average hours of sleep you are getting per night. Over a 1 or 2 day period, some variation on either side of the average, sometimes even drastic, is fine as long as you are getting enough sleep when looked as an average over the long term.
