Ask The Coach Weekly QnA: long run on trail or road; aerobic training exclusively

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Gayatri asks: “Should I run my long runs on a trail or road?”

A. If you are not specifically training for a trail marathon, then its advisable and safer to do your long runs on the road. In addition to the stress of the long run, trails introduce another stress on your body in the form on an uneven surface and potential climbs. This additional stress can be best avoided.

Q. Swapnil asks: “Is it advisable to do aerobic training only for 2-3 months in a year”?

A. I assume by aerobic training, you mean easy running. If so, no, I would not recommend doing only easy runs for 2-3 months. It makes your legs stale and you loose the “zing” from your legs. Keep the majority of running easy, and do a little speed-work, strides, tempo runs, etc. If in doubt, follow the 80/20 principle – 80% easy, 20% hard.
