Ask The Coach Weekly QnA: hard workouts in hot weather; 15 year old running a half marathon

Coach Atul Godbole answers your training related questions…

Q. Santosh asks “Due to timing issues, I can only do my upcoming hard workout late in the day when weather is hot? Is that OK?”

A. Ideally no. The hot weather will add another element of stress to the hard workout. You will need more time for recovery. And you may not be able to execute your hard workout properly which will leave you feeling down. Its better if you just skip or postpone the hard workout and do an easy workout instead.

Q. Rita asks “Is it OK for my 15 year old daughter to run a half marathon? She runs a 10K event every few weeks”

A. Kudos to her! However, 15 is not the right age to do a 21K run. Let her stick to 10K distances and focus on improving her speed and overall strength for the next 3 to 5 years. After that she can consider doing a 21K. Do not push her to do more and more, especially if its against her will – you will only ensure that she burns out mentally, physically or both.
